thinking ahead

I know, it's not even February yet, but I am already thinking about our garden. I really want to grow more vegetables this year - things we can eat regularly, right out of the garden. The Sungold cherry tomatoes last year were a HUGE success - we had bowls full of them all summer long and even the most picky, non-veggie eatin' kids seemed to enjoy them at our playdates.
So I am thinking of lots of salad greens, peapods, maybe carrots, or even potatoes, some more beets; pumpkins, squash and zucchini in the alley (our alley is grass and ends at our property so it's kind of unused), and definitely tomatoes.
And I need to think of some kind of raspberry management - something to help hold the runners up more so that we can get to more of the plant.

Any other suggestions? After picking the cabbage-caterpillars off the broccoli every day I am timid about growing things which may become infested. The last thing I want is for the kids to encounter a bug when they are eating a home-grown vegetable.
